Third Avenue Traffic in the Rain, based on my smaller sketches, presents one of my favorite nighttime views, when just the lights and the darks give us clues as to what’s going on in the streets below.
Perched on my corner balcony high above the New York City streets, I drew , over a period of 4 years, what I saw when I awoke each morning and often also at night . I could look North- up Third Avenue, East-toward the East River, and Northwest- towards the Empire State Building. The same three views always looked different, depending on the time of year, the hour, and the weather. These sketchbooks, with work done in watercolor, pen and ink, and pastel, became the basis for my larger Balcony Series studio paintings :
