Majestic West Mitten In the Storm

I captured this photograph of another view of this rare spring storm sweeping across Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, taken as sleet and snow moved quickly through the desert landscape. What an experience! In this composition, I intentionally framed a small bush in the foreground, with the West Mitten in the background, adding depth and a sense of place to the vast scene beyond. The foreground plant grounds the image, contrasting the intimate details of the desert floor with the immense scale of the valley.

Beyond the bush, the iconic buttes and mesas emerge through layers of haze and precipitation, their familiar red-orange tones muted beneath soft whites and grays. The sky carries subtle purples and pinks, reflecting the unsettled weather as the storm blankets parts of the valley. Streaks of orange sand show through the thin layer of snow and sleet, creating natural textures unique to this fleeting moment. Captured on May 11, 2024, this scene preserves the quiet drama of Monument Valley during an unexpected and unforgettable desert storm.
