Face Rock Overlook Canyon de Chelly

Piece description from the artist

A beautiful view from Face Rock Overlook at Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona, USA. These cliff walls are around 1000 feet tall! This is along the South Rim. You can’t really see Face Rock from the overlook, but it is easily seen from Spider Rock Overlook, just a mile down the road. There are a few sets of unnamed ruins that are visible in the alcoves along the bold orange canyon walls. Face Rock gets its name from the face-like shadow it casts across the canyon wall. Sometimes it is referred to as Talking Rock by the Navajo. They say to their kids that the rock reports their misbehavior to Spider Woman, who lives atop Spider Rock. Spider Woman will then take the naughty children back to her lair to eat them. They also say the white rocks at the top of Spider Rock are bleached bones of children who didn’t listen to their parents. What a story to tell to make sure your kids behave!
