Winter Reflections At Sylvan Lake

A light May snowfall blankets the spruce trees and rugged granite formations surrounding Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, South Dakota, USA. I captured this beautiful scene while soft reflections still shimmered across the water before fading away. Known as the crown jewel of the Black Hills, Sylvan Lake takes on a magical appearance when fresh snow dusts the evergreen branches and rocky shoreline. Above the lake, the clouds glow with hints of warm evening sunlight as it tries to break through.

When I first saw snow in the forecast for our trip, I have to admit I was disappointed. I had pictured green trees and mild spring weather, not a winter-like landscape in May. But seeing Sylvan Lake transformed by the fresh snowfall quickly changed my mind. The delicate white covering brought out the beauty of the granite boulders and evergreens in a way I hadn't expected. What I initially thought would be a disappointment turned into one of those unforgettable photography moments that reminds me how beautiful God's creation can be, even when it doesn't go according to plan.
