Piece description from the artist
This unique upward looking black and white photograph captures the Whitefish Point Lighthouse from beneath its towering structure on a cloudy and rainy day in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Located along the dangerous southern shoreline of Lake Superior—famously known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes", the Whitefish Point Light is the oldest operating lighthouse on the lake and one of its most vital navigational aids. Every vessel entering or exiting Lake Superior must pass this point, which marks a critical course change toward the Soo Locks. The area has seen more shipwrecks than any other part of the lake, highlighting the lighthouse’s historical and ongoing importance. Construction of the original light began in 1847, and it was first lit in 1849, making it one of the earliest lighthouses on Lake Superior. Its design was said to resemble that of the Old Presque Isle Light, and it remains an enduring symbol of maritime safety in the Upper Peninsula.
