Piece description from the artist
An afternoon view from Tseyi Overlook (also known as Tsegi Overlook, with Tséyiʼ as the traditional Navajo spelling) in Chinle, Arizona, within Canyon de Chelly National Monument. From this scenic stop along the South Rim Drive, Chinle Creek winds through the canyon below, bordered by green trees that provide a vivid contrast to the surrounding desert terrain. Above, towering orange cliffs rise dramatically, revealing layers of texture, sculpted formations, and shadowed alcoves shaped over time. Near where I was standing are some thin rock walls sticking out of the cliff.
Rich in cultural history, this canyon was once home to cliff dwellings built by the Ancestral Puebloans between 350 and 1300 A.D. In later years, ancestors of the Hopi used the area seasonally, and the Navajo Nation (Diné) have lived here since the early 1700s, maintaining a deep and continuous connection to this remarkable landscape.
