A night I’ll never forget under the skies of Missouri as the Aurora Borealis came alive above Fellows Lake in Springfield. Curtains of color with pink, red, green, and violet, moved and shimmered overhead, their reflections rippling softly across the still lake below. It felt surreal to watch the northern lights dancing so far south, turning a quiet Midwestern night into something extraordinary.
On October 10, 2024, a powerful solar storm pushed the aurora to a remarkable KP index of 8.67, making it visible across much of the United States and reportedly as far south as Florida. Even on a busy weeknight, stepping outside proved more than worth it. This was my second time witnessing the northern lights, but the first time I could clearly see them with my own eyes instead of only through a camera lens. Watching the colors glow above and mirror across the calm water was a humbling, magical moment, one of those rare experiences that stays with you long after the sky goes dark again.
