Brandon Woods approaches photography not as a traditional photographer, but as a painter who uses the camera as an extension of his brush. His technique is exemplified by the painterly quality of this photograph, with its soft transitions and rich, layered hues. This photograph captures a scene rich in layers and vibrant with color. The central focus is on a sunflower bathed in a surreal light, its natural form and environment fractured and refracted through a prism. The overlapping layers of colors—ranging from deep blues and greens to intense oranges and reds—create a dynamic interplay that gives the image a sense of movement and energy. The recognizable form of the sunflower is juxtaposed with the foreshortened hood of an old truck, blurring the boundaries between the organic and the mechanical, and inviting the viewer to explore a world where engineering and nature are harmoniously intertwined through a prismatic lens.
Brandon Woods (b. 1987, Knoxville, TN, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist who creates his work at the intersection of art, craft, science, and math. His research-based process has led him to create dynamic abstract paintings on innovative, dimensional shaped panels and to creating prismatic photographs bursting with color. Woods earned his MFA in Painting from SCAD in 2015 and his BFA in Studio Art (Painting and Sculpture) from Middle Tennessee State University in 2010. He has received numerous awards and grants for his work, including most recently an American Rescue Plan grant through the combined support of the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville, the City of Knoxville, and the Federal Department of the Treasury to construct a large-scale work based on the James Webb Space Telescope that is now on permanent display in the Emporium in downtown Knoxville. His work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and internationally: in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Hong Kong, Canada, and France. He currently lives and works in Knoxville, TN.
