On a crisp January morning, I wandered the shoreline of Hollywood Beach, seeking the lifeguard station that would best embody my vision. The sky’s palette harmonized with the lifeguard station’s vibrant hues, and once I found the perfect composition, I clicked away. Newly Risen became my first photograph of 2020—a two-piece panoramic stitch that immortalized the dawn of a new day and a new era for these iconic structures.
Since 2015, I have been drawn to the weathered wooden lifeguard stations of Hollywood Beach, each one brimming with character and history. When the city began replacing them in late 2019, I felt a bittersweet mix of nostalgia and hope. The new stations, with their bold colors, proved to be a stunning subject, especially when bathed in the soft glow of early morning light. Their wooden construction, a continuation of tradition, resonated deeply with me, offering a more organic and visually pleasing alternative to the plastic or fiberglass stations found on other beaches.
