Although I prefer his landscapes, I think we all lust after desserts after encountering a Wayne Thiebaud cake. It is important for an artist to encourage his or her appetites, otherwise the still life will amount to a mirthless exercise in draftsmanship. In color theory I learned that although there is no such thing as an ugly color, certain colors and shades play together better than others. In creating the Limone flavored gelato, I kept reminding myself of this principle. Counter intuitive as it was, the gray colors worked best to portray that particular flavor.
Carolyn Beehler is a paper artist living in Franklin, Tennessee. She was born in California but grew up in the South. She attended elementary school on Henpeck Lane and finished with art school in that same town at O’More College of Design. She spent the next number of years traveling to places like Shanghai, Italy and L.A., because she worried she’d settle down and never get to see the world. She returned in 2014 and now works as a paper artist. Carolyn also likes gardening, reading and baking.
