Piece description from the artist
Toulouse-Lautrec, the great painter of nightlife, offered inspiration for this artwork. This piece presented unique challenges compared to works filled with light. The narrow spectrum of darks and shades that hint at figures and forms required much more precise paper swatches. Sometimes, a single shade required searching through twenty or more magazines. Equally challenging was creating flesh tones that captured the unnatural light without making the skin look rancid. That said, this scene is a window to one of my favorite memories of Shanghai where somehow I found my way into a Dolce and Gabbana opening.
Carolyn Beehler is a paper artist living in Franklin, Tennessee. She was born in California but grew up in the South. She attended elementary school on Henpeck Lane and finished with art school in that same town at O’More College of Design. She spent the next number of years traveling to places like Shanghai, Italy and L.A., because she worried she’d settle down and never get to see the world. She returned in 2014 and now works as a paper artist. Carolyn also likes gardening, reading and baking.
