As the sun set over Imperial Dunes in California, I noticed the dune below me was bathed in the warm light of the setting sun while the dune I stood on was colored in cool blue shadows. I liked the optical illusion of using a long focal length to compress the background and foreground.
For the first four years of his life, before his family decided to make a home in Florida, Montgomery Gilchrist was raised on a sailboat off the coast Central and South America. As an adult, he taught English in Tokyo for two years then subsequently settled in Manhattan. He is a world traveler and maintains a passionate interest in the ways different people live.
