Piece description from the artist
Standing beside a rugged dirt road winding through the Utah desert and the Mexican Mountain Wilderness, it's striking how breathtaking the desert can be. The layered colors of the mesa rock mountains create a vivid tapestry, while the unique shapes of the buttes and rock formations add a sense of wonder to the landscape. This road, known as Buckhorn Draw Road or Lawrence Road, led us to the San Rafael Swinging Bridge and Buckhorn Wash—a journey well worth the effort. The Mexican Mountain Wilderness showcases the dramatic erosion of the multicolored sedimentary rocks of the eastern San Rafael Swell, with vibrant cliffs, buttes, ridges, alcoves, and pinnacles dominating the scenery. Elevations range from 4,700 feet in the southeast to 6,900 feet atop Mexican Mountain. The terrain is a mix of barren rock and pinyon-juniper woodlands interspersed with brush and grass, creating diverse habitats. These environments support a variety of wildlife, including bighorn sheep, cougars, raptors, and reptiles, alongside rare plant species like the endangered Maguire daisy and Wright fishhook cactus.
