In the heart of downtown Springfield, Missouri, a tall sunflower reaches skyward in a thriving urban garden. A bumblebee busily works its way across the dark center, collecting pollen on an afternoon. A wall in the background has ivy vines crawling up the wall. These iconic blooms, members of the Asteraceae family and part of the Helianthus genus, are known for their radiant, sun-like faces and remarkable height, sometimes exceeding 10 feet. Beyond their beauty, sunflowers produce edible seeds packed into their large, round centers, making them both ornamental and practical.

Jennifer White is a professional photographer from the Ozarks in Southwest Missouri, United States.
