The Unbroken Thread: A Tribute to Ukraine

Piece description from the artist

The Unbroken Thread a Tribute to Ukraine is an interspecies collaboration woven from silk, linen and burlap sourced from Ukraine and transformed by the labor of honeybees. The circular wax form, amended by the hive, becomes a living diagram of reciprocity—each cell a reminder of the fragile structures that sustain life. The inclusion of delicate fibers, tied to a region marked by conflict, underscores the precariousness not only of ecological systems but also of human society. Medyn’s work invokes a call to respect all species and the environments we share, reminding us that survival depends on sustaining the fragile threads of connection that bind us to one another and to the living earth.

About Susan Medyn

Tiverton, RI

Susan Medyn is an eco-artist whose practice bridges environmental art and interspecies collaboration. Using natural materials such as linen, rattan, seed heads, and beeswax from her own hives, she creates sculptural works in partnership with honeybees. Her art encourages reflection on our relationship to the environment and the fragile interdependence of all living systems. She has a long history of painting whimsical watercolors and nautical maps but turned to environmental art as a way to bring awareness to our fragile environment. She at times has up to 1,000,000 tiny studio assistants helping her with her sculptures.

Susan has exhibited locally, nationally, as well as internationally in Monaco, Poland, Belgium, Paris and the Loire Valley, France as well as in the USA . She participates in the annual South Coast Artists Open Studio Tours annually.
