Piece description from the artist
A beautiful and vibrant sunrise rises behind the granite rock formations surrounding Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park, South Dakota, USA. The warm morning light illuminates the rugged landscape while reflecting across the peaceful waters of one of the Black Hills' most treasured destinations.
What made this morning especially memorable was the unexpected snow. Even though it was late May, a spring snowstorm had moved through the area the day before, leaving patches of fresh snow clinging to the rocks and hillsides. The contrast between the white snow and the gray granite created a scene that felt almost surreal.
Before arriving, I had been disappointed to see snow in the forecast, worried it might affect our plans and photography opportunities. Instead, it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. Seeing snow in the mountains and capturing it in my photographs was something I wasn't sure I would ever experience, and waking up to this incredible sunrise made it even more special. It was one of those moments that reminds me why I love exploring and photographing nature.
Often called the crown jewel of the Black Hills, Sylvan Lake was created in 1891 when Theodore Reder constructed a dam across Sunday Gulch Creek. Today, it remains one of South Dakota's most iconic scenic destinations, known for its dramatic granite formations, crystal-clear waters, scenic hiking trails, and outstanding photography opportunities throughout the year.
