Piece description from the artist
I photographed this beautiful swallowtail butterfly on a warm summer morning, just as it settled into a patch of bright orange lantana blooms. The air was still, the sky was soft and blue, and for a moment the whole garden felt like it was holding its breath so this little visitor could enjoy its breakfast in peace.
What I love most about this image is the sense of calm it brings. There’s something magical about watching a butterfly move from flower to flower. It's so delicate, so unhurried. Having this photograph on the wall reminds me to slow down and appreciate the tiny wonders that show up when we give ourselves permission to pause. It feels like a small burst of sunshine and joy every time I look at it.
Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
