Piece description from the artist
This photograph was taken near the end of summer on the prairie during a moment when everything feels warm and full, but you can already sense the season beginning to shift. The sunflowers were standing tall in the breeze, almost like they were soaking up every last drop of golden light before autumn arrived. And that lone tree in the distance felt like an anchor in all that open space, a reminder that even in the vastness, there’s always something steady to hold onto.
What I love about this image is how hopeful it feels. Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of those quiet transitions in life and the ones where beauty doesn’t disappear, it just changes form. Having this on the wall brings that warm, late-summer calm into the room, and it always makes me pause and breathe a little deeper.
Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
