Here I enjoyed the chance to celebrate the daintier side of Shanghai's gastronomic offerings. I'd certainly enjoyed the vulgar delights of grocery gazing, notably including dried, flattened pig heads, packages of deflated shrimp and chicken feet for starters. I learned about mung bean, bubble tea, pork floss and scallion pancakes. I still crave the black sesame french toast and regular helpings of indigo eggplant glistening with sesame oil, so much more so than the kale smoothies I make these days. Although this Sugar and Spice Cafe is clearly a European joint, I think it is successful in applauding their vast, creative palate. And besides, I came here to celebrate my birthday.
Carolyn Beehler is a paper artist living in Franklin, Tennessee. She was born in California but grew up in the South. She attended elementary school on Henpeck Lane and finished with art school in that same town at O’More College of Design. She spent the next number of years traveling to places like Shanghai, Italy and L.A., because she worried she’d settle down and never get to see the world. She returned in 2014 and now works as a paper artist. Carolyn also likes gardening, reading and baking.
