Piece description from the artist
I captured this landscape photograph from the Island in the Sky scenic pull off along Iron Mountain Road and the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway in Keystone, South Dakota. You can see part of the road curving through the landscape on the left. A mostly cloudy sky drifts across the distant Black Hills, creating a dramatic contrast between the dark, pine-covered mountains and the open prairie in the foreground. Located within the Custer State Park area, this overlook offers wide views of one of South Dakota's most iconic landscapes. The Oglala Lakota refer to these mountains as Paha Sapa, or the Black Hills, a name inspired by the dense evergreen forests that give the range their dark appearance from afar. Rising more than 4,000 feet above the surrounding Great Plains, the Black Hills stand out like an island on the horizon, making the name Island in the Plains especially fitting. Golden yellow grasses add a contrast to the blue and green tones.
