In graduate school at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I started an experimental technique in the color darkroom. I was researching light, specifically scientific light colors on a different color wheel than pigment paint. Cyan, Magenta and Yellow are the primary colors and I found how to create them and secondary colors with the color enlarger. This led me to years of investigation and as an abstract artist by nature, an inward view emerged. This series represents to me: new life, single celled organisms, clusters of plankton, diatoms, etc. My questions around being adopted were explored as I learned to create life in my fictional world. I used glass light sconces and started blowing my own glass for the purpose of photogramming my new cellular organisms. This work has been exhibited at the Paul Robeson Gallery in Newark, NJ, the Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, Gallery Imperato in Baltimore, MD, The Red Dot Art Fair in NYC and The Arts League of Washington in Washington, DC.

Laura McClanahan's artwork is an exploration of natural patterns. Her main thesis is a study of water forms as a metaphor for thought patterns. Through photography and painting, Laura experiments with abstract imagery inspired by nature and her inner understanding of micro and macro patterns. Her images could be celestial or microscopic, this is her understanding of "as above, so below".

Laura is a graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art with an MFA degree in Studio Art. She uses experimental techniques with color darkroom photograms, video and large format printing. Laura continues to expand her explorations via paintings with resin and gemstones. Her painting series are well exhibited in New York City and at Art Fairs.
