Piece description from the artist
This vibrant orange sandstone formation, commonly known as Shell Sand Cave, is tucked behind a Shell gas station near Page, Arizona, the origin of its well-known nickname. Despite being referred to as a cave, it is technically an alcove, and this view looks toward its sweeping entrance. You can't see them in this photo, but there are some poeple standing on the other side of the sandy dune. I waited for them to get their photo and then they went down the hill. That angle is the most sought-after composition while standing inside and looking outward, often with a person standing atop the dune for scale.
Getting there involves a relatively short hike, but the deep, loose sand can make the walk more challenging than expected, especially in the desert heat. I captured several images of this incredible formation, though we weren’t able to step inside for the classic outward-facing perspective. A group of people stayed in the opening for quite some time, limiting access for others waiting. Needing to get to the Lake Powell dam, we couldn't wain on them an longer and several others got tired of waiting too. As a photographer, I always aim to be respectful, take my photos and then move aside so others can enjoy the experience. A little courtesy helps preserve both the moment and the magic of this unique desert location.
