Scholar rock

Scholar Rock

Piece description from the artist

I drew elements of this piece from photographs I took at the Huntington Gardens in California. I was fascinated by the Scholar Rocks they had in the Chinese Pavilion- special rocks that are only found under West Lake in China. These rocks are planned as part of the garden layouts, imbued with both earth and water elements, since they are made of earth but uniquely formed by water movement. Scholars are said to contemplate the shapes in the rocks while thinking deeply.
