Rearrangement in Peonies

Piece description from the artist

Lately, I've been working on implementing the concept of abstraction within realism. To accomplish this technique, I fall back upon everyone's favorite grade-school method of art making: collage. This way, I can cut apart, rearrange, and experiment with placement of color and detail. I like that I can engage more of the composition by flipping some elements around or swapping them out. I've also been enjoying the juxtaposition of geometric, kaleidoscopic motifs against highly realistic and organic subject matter. I create a final, methodical and traditional painting based on my experimentation.

About Meghan Murray

Norton, MA

Meghan C Murray is an emerging artist and educator in Massachusetts. After earning her BS in Studio Art and Arts Administration at Skidmore College, she completed a year-long residency at the Emerson Umbrella Arts Center in Concord, MA, where she strengthened her independent practice in a non-academic setting. Murray currently maintains her studio practice in southeastern Massachusetts, actively involved in the community that helped raise her to be an artist. An instructor at Hunakai Studios, she leads students of all ages to improve upon their own art-making and finds fulfillment in mentoring high schoolers who hope to pursue art after graduation.

Murray works primarily in traditional oils. Her methodical practice is influenced by the blending of various moments in art history with the contemporary. She is interested in the influence of light on color and the resulting nuance. Through the work, Murray examines her compositions with careful detail and consideration, with hopes of capturing subtlety in a painterly manner.
