Piece description from the artist
“Who you lookin’ at?” That was definitely the expression on this Common Raven’s face as it stared straight at me from a stone fence post at Agua Canyon Overlook in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. I captured this photograph during one of those fun wildlife encounters where the bird seems just as curious about me as the photographer as I was about them.
The raven’s direct gaze gives this portrait so much personality, while the sunlight catches its dark feathers and reveals subtle purple highlights in the plumage. Its large, heavy, slightly curved black beak adds to that bold, almost mischievous look. Behind it, a pine tree and a glimpse of Bryce Canyon’s brilliant orange limestone formations provide a beautiful natural backdrop.
Common Ravens are known for their intelligence, curiosity, and charismatic personalities, and this one certainly seemed to have plenty of attitude! I loved how it paused long enough to give me such a perfect, inquisitive look, it almost felt like I was the one being photographed.
