This closer view highlights the incredible scale of Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I captured this photograph in May 2026, documenting the continued progress of the massive granite sculpture carved into Thunderhead Mountain near Custer.
From this perspective, the face of Crazy Horse is becoming remarkably lifelike, and part of the emerging hand and a single finger can now be seen. Seeing these details up close offers a greater appreciation for the precision and dedication required to carve one of the world's largest mountain monuments.
Crazy Horse was a respected Oglala Lakota war leader known for his bravery, leadership, and commitment to preserving the traditional way of life of his people. Work on the memorial began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues today, creating a lasting tribute to Native American heritage and one of the Black Hills' most iconic landmarks.
