Piece description from the artist
Brandon Woods created this image while exploring a creek bed in East Tennessee. Photographing through a prism which fractured and reassembled light from various angles and perspectives, creating an imaginary landscape where reality blurs into an alternate dimension. The reflections in the water, which should logically mirror the sky and the surrounding landscape, instead offer a fractured glimpse of another place entirely. This distortion is subtle, yet profound; the hanging branches find their way into the reflection, but the tree beyond them seems almost non-existent in the actual scene, save for a distant silhouette far on the horizon. The colors in this photograph, taken in the spring, suggest the turning of autumn in the yellow and orange foliage in the foreground, while the deep blues and violets in the sky and water are reminiscent of winter, further dislocating the viewer from any single, anchored reality, inviting them to question the nature of reality, perception, and the unseen worlds that exist just beyond the veil of the visible.
Brandon Woods (b. 1987, Knoxville, TN, USA) is an interdisciplinary artist who creates his work at the intersection of art, craft, science, and math. He has received numerous awards and grants for his work, including most recently an American Rescue Plan grant through the combined support of the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville, the City of Knoxville, and the Federal Department of the Treasury to construct a large-scale work based on the James Webb Space Telescope that is now on permanent display in the Emporium in downtown Knoxville. His work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States and internationally: in New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Dallas, Hong Kong, Canada, and France.
