In the open expanse of a sunlit prairie, three horses stand together in quiet unity: alert, curious, and calm. Prairie Companions is more than a portrait of animals in nature; it’s a moment of connection and companionship. The warmth of their presence, combined with the lush greens of early summer, evokes peace, belonging, and resilience.
Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
