Turning Toward the Light

Piece description from the artist

I photographed this sunflower because of the way it leans: not perfectly upright, not staged, just gently turning toward the light. Against the blue color, it felt honest and hopeful. Sometimes strength looks like softness, and resilience looks like simply showing up again.

This image matters to me because it brings a sense of calm optimism into a space. On a wall, I see it offering a breath of fresh air with something bright but not overwhelming, something that quietly lifts the room and the people in it. It’s the kind of photograph that says, you’re allowed to slow down, and you’re still moving in the right direction.

About Jerred Zegelis

Omaha, NE

Jerred Zegelis was a public high school teacher for almost 20 years before becoming a full-time artist, using a camera as his primary means of expression. Zegelis infuses his love of the natural world into his photography, specifically thinking of the ways local artists interact with the world around them. He does not focus on mountains or oceans, large cities and tropical paradises and instead turns his lens toward the common dirt roads, prairies and open skies of the midwest. He has worked on many large-scale photography projects with another healthcare photographer, and making high-resolution imagery is his primary focus now for large spaces.
