Piece description from the artist
Feel the warmth on a late summers day, as you walk through the orchard. The dappled light streaming through the trees. This acrylic on paper painting uses Impasto passages of paint overlaid with transparent layers of ink to capture the thickness of the hot air as it rises. Available as a print part of a series of abstract paintings that evoke feelings of landscape, place and time.
Painting in his home town of Liverpool, UK, Phil has been developing his abstract works on paper and canvas, influenced primarily by color-field art, marked by airy compositions that celebrate the joys of pure color.
In these works, the entire space of the picture is conceived as a "field" that appears to spread beyond the edges of the surface, and three-dimensional illusionism is completely jettisoned.
In many of the paintings the process investigates how areas of color battle with the edges of the composition.
With a background in the digital graphic arts and video production this is a new and exciting direction that is being explored using watercolor, gouache, and acrylic on paper and canvas.
Phil's preoccupations include the lingering atmosphere of nature, flowers, aerial landscapes – and especially memories of times and places traveled.
