Piece description from the artist
Aerial landscape – colliding blue and yellow, fighting for dominance. I enjoy this vibrant clash mixed with the muted tones – These areas of color are always moving.
Shifting areas of color, that bleed and run into one another. Like a landscape from above, with countries borders competing for territory.
Painting in his home town of Liverpool, UK, Phil has been developing his abstract works on paper and canvas, influenced primarily by color-field art, marked by airy compositions that celebrate the joys of pure color.
In these works, the entire space of the picture is conceived as a "field" that appears to spread beyond the edges of the surface, and three-dimensional illusionism is completely jettisoned.
In many of the paintings the process investigates how areas of color battle with the edges of the composition.
With a background in the digital graphic arts and video production this is a new and exciting direction that is being explored using watercolor, gouache, and acrylic on paper and canvas.
Phil's preoccupations include the lingering atmosphere of nature, flowers, aerial landscapes – and especially memories of times and places traveled.
