More Lightness of Being

Piece description from the artist

Many artists have painted the same image several times. It's a rare occasion when I do that, but for this painting, I felt compelled to recreate the image you see here from a painting I did in 2017 which recently sold to a collector in Germany. Almost immediately, I began to miss it which is why I decided to create a new version (only larger than the original). The painting features a young girl in a red dress standing on a rocky shore, holding a rope tied to a giant floating boulder. The sea and sky create a serene backdrop. So what does it all mean? That's for the viewer to determine. There is mystery and childlike wonder in this painting. It's absurd. It's surreal. The actual painting is not quite identical to the original – I knew it wouldn't be. The color of the sky, the sea, the waves, the rocks – all are a bit different than the original. Yet all quite the same. It's a striking visual and I love it. And if I sell the original of this version? Who knows, I might paint it again because it's quite the challenge!

About Tom Blood

St. Louis, MO

Tom Blood is a self-taught, modern-day surrealist, heavily influenced by his all-time favourite artist, Rene Magritte. Some of his early works include two crowd favorites – "Bobby Hull" which was created using a palette knife and "The Three Stooges" which was created using three primary colors. Since that time, Tom has pursued a more surrealistic path. He paints ideas. His goal is to paint the impossible, or at least, the highly improbable. With his paintings, viewers can always tell what's going on, not necessarily knowing why. He wants his paintings to tell stories that make people think, or bring a smile. His work has won numerous awards locally and he has had a number of solo shows in the St. Louis, Missouri area where he was born and raised.
