Milky Way at Moosehead Lake

Piece description from the artist

In the North East of the US the core of The Milky Way Galaxy is only visible during the summer months. Last year at the end of the season I went up to Tomhegan Wilderness Cabins on Moosehead Lake, Maine for 3 days to shoot the Milky Way but it was cloudy the entire time. This year I went up again and the first night there were clouds. I was worried! But like magic, the sky opened up just as it was getting dark and I finally got the shot I was looking for. They call it "Milky Way chasing" for a reason!

About Katharine Bourgeois

Leominster, MA

I'm a fine art photographer and filmmaker living in the Boston area. I grew up here in Massachusetts always playing outside as a young child. Nature and the beauty of New England's landscapes continues to be the inspiration for my work. I was formally trained in painting and photography at Skidmore College graduating with a Bachelors Degree as a Fine Arts major in 2008. My very first photography class was through my Paris abroad program with Skidmore. I first learned how to take photos with a manual film camera. We developed and printed our own photos in the darkroom. I believe starting out this way helped me to be a better photographer. Now I've gone digital but I still always shoot in manual mode so that I have the most control possible over how my photographs come out.
