Piece description from the artist
This selective color vertical photograph I captured is another colorful perspective of Cadillac Ranch, one of the most recognizable roadside art installations in the American Southwest. Standing along the open plains near Amarillo, the row of classic Cadillacs remains buried nose-first in the ground with their tailfins rising toward the sky. Installed in 1974 and featuring models from 1949 through 1963, the cars were originally placed as a bold piece of public art, but over the decades they have transformed into a constantly evolving canvas shaped by travelers passing through the Texas Panhandle. For this version, the cars are in color while the background is black and white.
In this closer scene, the incredible buildup of spray paint becomes especially noticeable. Countless layers of bright colors, names, symbols, and artistic expressions completely coat the vehicles. In some places, the paint has accumulated so heavily that it has begun to sag and droop under its own weight, forming thick drips and textured ridges that add depth to the surface. Fresh paint continues to be added over older layers, creating a striking blend of new color and hardened history. Located just off historic U.S. Route 66 near Interstate 40, Cadillac Ranch stands as a living monument to creativity, where the artwork never stays the same and each visitor helps shape its next layer.
