Layers Of Color Cadillac Ranch Select Color

Piece description from the artist

This selective color photo shows another vibrant view of Cadillac Ranch, where roadside history and creative expression meet along the wide-open plains of the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo. A row of vintage Cadillacs, buried nose-first into the ground, stands in a tilted line with their iconic tailfins pointing skyward. Originally installed in 1974, the cars, spanning model years from 1949 to 1963, have become an ever-changing outdoor art installation that invites visitors to leave their mark.

Layer upon layer of colorful spray paint covers every inch of the vehicles, forming a bold patchwork of names, messages, symbols, and spontaneous artwork. Bright new paint splashes across older layers that have cracked and faded over time, creating a textured record of the many travelers who have stopped here. In this scene, a person stands near one of the Cadillacs, blending almost seamlessly into the explosion of color, highlighting how visitors themselves become part of the evolving artwork. Positioned along historic U.S. Route 66 and just off Interstate 40, Cadillac Ranch continues to stand as one of America’s most recognizable and interactive roadside attractions, an ever changing symbol of creativity on the open road. in this photograph, the cars are in color while everything else is in black and white.
