Piece description from the artist
A black and white dramatic moment as powerful waves crashed against the historic St. Joseph North Pier Inner and Outer Lights in St. Joseph, Michigan, USA. Some waves surged an estimated 10 to 20 feet into the air, exploding into white spray as they slammed into the pier and crash around it. It was both intense and mesmerizing to witness, easily one of the most unforgettable highlights of our trip.
The twin lighthouses mark the entrance to the St. Joseph River where it meets Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes. The original station dates back to 1832, while the current lights were constructed in 1906 and 1907. Though decommissioned in 2005, a restoration committee formed in 2014 successfully raised $2 million to preserve the structures, completing a full restoration in 2016. Today, they stand not only as navigational landmarks but as enduring symbols of resilience against the ever-changing power of the lake.
