Big Spring – A Natural Wonder in the Ozarks, Van Buren, Missouri
A view walking down the shaded wooden walkway which leads to a breathtaking sight that emerges around the bend ahead at Big Spring, near Van Buren, Missouri. This powerful natural spring bubbles up through the rocky Ozarks terrain, resembling a giant pot of boiling water. Its vivid blue-green color is completely natural, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding forest. Located in Mark Twain National Forest and managed by the U.S. National Park Service, Big Spring surges through massive boulders, producing dramatic, boil-like rapids. On average, an astonishing 288 million gallons of water flow from the spring each day. It is enough to fill the St. Louis baseball stadium in only 33 hours. This makes it the largest spring in the United States.
