Piece description from the artist
This photograph highlights the historic Shepherd Sawmill at Jolly Mill Park in Pierce City, Missouri, offering a step back in time to Missouri’s early industrial heritage. Established in 1915, the scene features both the original wooden sawmill and its adjacent office building, where visitors can peer through the windows and glimpse preserved interior details from the early 20th century.
The sawmill remains operational during special events, powered by an antique Case steam tractor, demonstrating the steam-driven technology that once fueled Ozark industry. This area of the park preserves the spirit of the former town of Jollification, with historic buildings relocated to recreate the community’s original setting and atmosphere. Recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, the Shepherd Sawmill stands as a meaningful Missouri landmark, celebrating craftsmanship, innovation, and the enduring legacy of the Ozarks.
