This magazine collage captures my experience of Hong Kong as a busy, compact, vibrant, and industrious city. Despite the composed demeanor of each family member, the viewer's eye cannot rest any place for long, evidenced not only by the individuals looking into different spaces but also by the spools of thread, which seem pointed in various directions. You feel in these portraits a taste of their dignity and longing. I took this picture at a time in my life when I was living in Shanghai and homesick for a place I had not yet found. Perhaps the subconscious truth I unearthed in making this collage is that there is beauty even in lonely chapters of life when you are simply passing through.
Carolyn Beehler is a paper artist living in Franklin, Tennessee. She was born in California but grew up in the South. She attended elementary school on Henpeck Lane and finished with art school in that same town at O’More College of Design. She spent the next number of years traveling to places like Shanghai, Italy and L.A., because she worried she’d settle down and never get to see the world. She returned in 2014 and now works as a paper artist. Carolyn also likes gardening, reading and baking.
