Hacia la Virtud

Piece description from the artist

Location: Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico – 2017

In September 2017, one week before Hurricane Maria's catastrophic landfall, I returned to my ancestral home to document and enjoy Puerto Rico with my family. Among these photographs is an image from Old San Juan—a weathered doorway with our flag at the intersection of Calle Imperial and Calle de la Virtud.

I framed the photo to emphasize the weathered blue cobblestones (adoquines), laid by laborers centuries ago, leading the eye toward our iconic flag’s bold vibrant stance. This visual dialogue between our colonial foundations and our national emblem speaks to me of resistance—a testament to how Puerto Rico's identity persists despite centuries of oppression.

The flag's history mirrors this struggle. Following the U.S. invasion of 1898, displaying this symbol became a criminal act—an attempt to erase our national consciousness. Throughout the mid-20th century, possessing the flag could mean imprisonment or violence. Only through the courageous nationalist movements of the 1950s did we reclaim this banner as our own.

Today, this image takes on a deeper meaning. The doorway stands not just as art, but as a symbolic witness—having survived both the storm's fury and history's weight. This flag reminds us that while empires may impose their will, culture, and identity cannot be extinguished.

This photograph is part of Puerto Rican identity through visual storytelling.

About Santos Herman Lopez

Sacramento, CA

Santos "Sanzei" López is a fine art photographer for whom the camera is the culmination of a lifelong visual journey. His artistic practice was ignited in childhood with a simple 35mm film camera, a gift from his mother, who became his first subject and instilled in him the belief that photography could capture profound joy and connection.

This foundation evolved through decades of work as a graphic artist and graffiti writer, disciplines that permanently shaped his eye for composition, bold geometry, and layered texture. In 2015, he made a definitive commitment to photography, channeling this multidisciplinary vision into a focused pursuit of the definitive image.

Sanzei’s work transforms the contrasting landscapes of South Florida’s coasts and the Pacific Northwest into contemplative art. He approaches beaches, cityscapes, and mountain vistas as complex graphic arrangements, seeking the precise interplay of light, shadow, and form that transcends documentation to evoke feeling and narrative. His fine art pieces are featured on leading platforms like TurningArt.
