Faust e margherita

Faust e Margherita

Piece description from the artist

"Faust e Margherita" is part of the series "A little Known Marble". “A Little Known Marble” by Erika Zolli is a journey of imagination. In this project, the photographer wanted to immortalize ten monochrome sculptural marbles in the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan and she brings it back to life through color.
A process where photography intertwines with meticulous and accurate post-production.
The whole process was born from wanting to imagine these sculptures taking up the tradition of the typical color of ancient sculptures. The tradition of Renaissance classicism and neoclassical academicism has accustomed us to the monochrome of the statues, a situation far removed from the original state of the sculptures. The practice of coloring the sculptures probably ceased partly due to the desire to show the most precious materials and partly to imitate the ancient sculptures that were now found without their polychromy, leading us to mistakenly think that the classical world was totally devoid of color.
