Dances With Wolves Final Cliff Scene Site

Standing along Roughlock Falls Road and looking up at a recognizable landscape from the famous movie Dances With Wolves, I captured this view of the Winter Camp farewell filming location near Lead, South Dakota. The scene is located in Spearfish Canyon within the Black Hills.

As Dunbar, played by Kevin Costner, and Stands With A Fist, portrayed by Mary McDonnell, were leaving, Wind In His Hair, played by Rodney A. Grant, stood high on the cliff near the snag tree seen in this photograph. This is the location where Wind In His Hair famously called out to Dunbar, declaring that he was his friend.

The movie scene was filmed with the landscape covered in snow, giving it a very different appearance from this view. However, the distinctive cliff and surrounding terrain remain recognizable. The pine tree was full when Dances With Wolves was filmed, but the upper portion has since been broken off, likely from storm damage.
