Crazy Horse Vision And Reality

Piece description from the artist

This photograph captures a unique perspective of the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota during May 2026, featuring both the scale model of the completed sculpture and the massive mountain carving rising from Thunderhead Mountain in the background. Together, they provide a fascinating comparison between the artist's vision and the ongoing progress of one of the world's largest mountain sculpture projects.

In the foreground, the model depicts what the finished monument is intended to look like, with Crazy Horse mounted on horseback and pointing into the distance. Behind it, the granite mountain carving reveals the tremendous work completed so far, with impressive detail visible in the face and outstretched hand. Viewing the model alongside the mountain helps visitors appreciate the immense scale of the project and the magnitude of the work still to come.

Construction on the memorial began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues today as a tribute to the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse and Native American heritage. Located near Custer in the scenic Black Hills, the memorial remains one of South Dakota's most visited attractions and a popular stop for travelers exploring nearby landmarks such as Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and the Needles Highway.

This May 2026 photograph documents an important stage in the evolution of the monument, offering a glimpse of both the current progress and the ambitious vision that continues to emerge from the granite mountainside.
