Piece description from the artist
I captured this photograph from below, looking up at the impressive scale of Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Taken in May 2026, the image showcases the continued progress of the massive granite carving on Thunderhead Mountain near Custer.
The detailed face of Crazy Horse and the emerging hand reveal the incredible craftsmanship behind this monumental project. Below the sculpture, patches of snow still linger in the pine and river birch tree forest after a late spring snowfall the day before, adding a beautiful seasonal contrast to the rugged landscape.
Crazy Horse was a respected Oglala Lakota war leader remembered for his courage, leadership, and determination to protect the traditional way of life of his people. Work on the memorial began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and continues today, honoring Crazy Horse's legacy while remaining one of the Black Hills' most recognizable landmarks.
