Common Nighthawks Arkansas River Sunset

Check out his large flock of Common Nighthawks darting through the evening sky as the sun sets over the Arkansas River near Holly, Colorado, creating a memorable wildlife moment during our trip. Their fast, unpredictable flight made photographing them a real challenge, especially as they swooped and circled so close that I wasn't always sure which direction they would come from next.

Common Nighthawks are masters of aerial hunting, catching insects in flight during the evening hours when they are most active. Their swift, acrobatic movements make them fascinating to watch, even if they can be difficult to capture with a camera.

Golden sunlight glows behind the clouds while the fading blue sky adds beautiful contrast to the rural landscape. Below, the Arkansas River winds through open farmland, with green and yellow grasses and a simple fence line leading your eye across the peaceful countryside. I captured this scene along Highway 50/U.S. Route 400 near Granada, and it was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the High Plains at golden hour.
