Piece description from the artist
After Victor’s funeral, Vida stopped sleeping in their bed. It still smelled like him, cedar and shaving cream, like old tobacco. She couldn’t bear to disturb the sheets, so she slept in the chair by the mirror instead. The mirror had always unsettled her; Victor had found it at an estate sale years ago, a tall, heavy thing framed in blackened oak and carved with roses. “It’s romantic,” he’d said, running a finger over the wood. “Like us. A little worn, but it still shines.” After he died, the mirror became her only friend. Every night she sat before it, whispering to his reflection in her mind, hoping that if she stared long enough she might see something, anything, stir in its silver surface. She prayed to whatever god would listen. She didn’t want heaven. She wanted him. And one night, she got her wish. It began with the reflection breathing, slow, fogging breaths across the inside of the glass, then came a whisper, low and familiar: “Vida… why do you cry, my love?” Her heart froze. She looked up, and there he was. Victor. Not as he was in the coffin, but alive. His eyes glowed with the warmth she’d missed, and when he smiled, she felt her knees weaken. “You kept your promise,” he said softly. “You said you’d never leave me.” She reached for him; the glass was warm, trembling under her palm like living skin. “Come with me,” he murmured. “You’ve been so lonely. You don’t belong there anymore.” She told herself it was grief. She told herself she was dreaming. But she kept coming back, night after night. The mirror grew brighter, her reflection dimmer, her voice hoarse from speaking to him. Her children called less, they said she sounded strange. “Your voice echoes, Mom,” one whispered. “Like someone’s there with you.” One stormy night, lightning split the sky, and Vida finally saw what was behind Victor in the mirror. The world he lived in wasn’t heaven, it was a corridor of mirrors, stretching into forever. Countless figures drifted there, couples holding hands, faces blurred by time, each pair smiling with the same eternal, glassy devotion. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Victor said, his hand pressed against the glass. “You and I can walk here forever. No pain, no years, no goodbye.” Vida hesitated, tears running down her face. “Will it hurt?” Victor’s eyes softened. “Only for a moment.” And then she stepped forward. The glass didn’t break, it swallowed her. There was a sigh, a sound like two hearts beating in unison for the last time. The mirror went black. When her children arrived weeks later, the house was silent. They found the chair overturned, the air cold, the mirror covered in frost. And in the glass, faintly, impossibly, two figures walked arm and arm through a mist that shimmered like moonlight on water, peacefully, in love. But if you linger too long in front of that mirror, they say you’ll see the frost spread across your reflection too, starting at the heart, then the eyes, and if you’re not careful, you’ll hear a voice whisper: “Come walk with us.”
About Alicia Lopez:
"Art is more than a mere snapshot of time; it's a window into the fleeting beauty of a specific moment, a chance to capture the perfect harmony that exists within it."
Alicia Lopez, an American painter, has brought this philosophy to life through her bold and evocative works. Having exhibited widely in both solo and group shows across the United States and Mexico, her artistic journey began in childhood. As a young girl, she would set up imaginary exhibitions for her mother, her first and most steadfast supporter.
"Without the beautiful angel God assigned me as a mom, I wouldn’t be who I am. All I am and will ever be is thanks to her. She is the strongest, kindest, and most lovable human being you will ever meet!" Alicia says, her voice brimming with love. Her mother’s encouragement laid the foundation for Alicia's passionate pursuit of art, and this deep-rooted sense of gratitude continues to fuel her work. Each of Alicia’s paintings is more than just a visual experience it’s a story. A narrative born from her desire to transform the world into a beautiful, peaceful dream. Her art seamlessly blends the realms of imagination and nature, inviting viewers to embrace the boundless beauty of the world around them.
"Without imagination, I wouldn't have created 80% of my artworks."
A true free spirit, Alicia refuses to be confined by any particular style. She considers herself an artist with no boundaries, a creator who works without limitations or rules. Her paintings often evoke the silent yet powerful forces of nature, each brushstroke a testament to her unrestricted creative process. While she works in both oils and acrylics, Alicia particularly favors acrylics for their versatility and fast-drying properties, which allow her to experiment and evolve without delay.
"I love to create freely without limitations or impossibilities. The best thing about art is there's no limitations."
Over the years, Alicia has built a devoted following and earned widespread recognition in the art world, expanding her reach to international audiences. Her solo exhibitions and collaborations have garnered critical acclaim, further solidifying her place in the global art scene.
"Success to me is the ability to create and love what you do. What seals it all together is having others love what you made with so much passion."
Alicia Lopez’s art is a reflection of her unyielding spirit—an invitation to experience the world through the eyes of someone who believes that imagination and nature hold the key to a life of limitless possibilities. For Alicia, every canvas tells a story, a story driven by an insatiable desire to make the world a more beautiful, peaceful place. Her paintings are more than works of art; they are an embrace of nature’s most stunning contradictions: the gentle and the fierce, the quiet and the loud, the seen and the unseen. Through her eyes, the world unfolds as a living, breathing dream, and she shares that dream with anyone willing to listen.
