Colorado Plains Sunset

Bold golden evening light glows along the horizon across the open prairie near Holly, Colorado, as the sun heads toward the horizon. I lvoe the wide sunbeams going upward through the blue sky. This wider landscape showcases the peaceful beauty of southeastern Colorado, where rolling grasslands, scattered trees, and dramatic clouds come together beneath a colorful sunset sky. A faint ribbon of reflected sunlight reveals a small section of the Arkansas River as it winds quietly through the tall grass.

In the distance, a flock of Common Nighthawks can be seen soaring above the countryside, adding a subtle touch of wildlife to the scene. These agile birds become most active at dusk, feeding on flying insects as daylight fades, making sunset one of the best times to watch their graceful aerial displays.

I captured this photograph during the final moments of golden hour, drawn to the warm colors and expansive landscape rather than a single subject. It was one of those evenings where the sky, the light, and the quiet countryside all came together, creating a peaceful ending to a day of exploring the High Plains. This is near Granada.
