Piece description from the artist
This photograph features Checkerboard Mesa and Crazy Quilt Mesa, two striking Navajo Sandstone summits rising over 6,520 feet in elevation in Zion National Park, located in Kane County, southwest Utah, United States. Positioned just southwest of the park’s east entrance, this iconic formation towers nearly 900 feet above the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway. I composed the shot to include a tall pine tree off to the side, adding scale and depth to the scene. The mesa’s distinct crisscrossed lines and weathered textures resemble a giant checkerboard, giving the landmark its name. A subtle glimpse of Highway 9 winds through on the side, tying the landscape to the traveler’s journey.
