I took this bird portrait at a wildlife preserve in Orlando, Florida, capturing a close-up of a Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) perched quietly against a backdrop of lush green foliage. Its layered brown and gray feathers, long dark bill, and distinctive hammer-shaped head are in focus, while the shallow depth of field creates a soft bokeh that highlights the bird’s elegant form.
The Hamerkop is a unique wading bird known for its elaborate nest-building behavior and is commonly found near wetlands, lakes, and marshes. Native to Africa but often seen in zoological and conservation parks, this species stands out for its fascinating appearance and remarkable nesting habits.
