Here's another view of one of the hand-carved granite tunnels along Iron Mountain Road. This is the C.C. Gideon Tunnel. This is part of Custer State Park in Keystone, South Dakota, USA and the beautiful Black Hills. This historic tunnel offers a glimpse of the craftsmanship and engineering that went into creating this iconic roadway during the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Measuring 13 feet wide and 11 feet tall, the one lane tunnel is not accessible to all vehicles.
On a mostly cloudy day, the soft light highlights the textures of the carved stone. This tunnel is one of several memorable stops. Behind me is a distant peak of Mount Rushmore that becomes visible as you drive through. I do also have photos of that view available too.
